Dayu, as her friends call her, is passionate about marine conservation while also supporting her coastal community in Bali, Indonesia. Dayu recognises the very important social and cultural aspects of the sea in her community while also understanding that conservation is so critical in combatting coastal degradation and marine life.
Finding out about the Australia Awards Scholarships through direct communication received from Australian institutions, Dayu decided to apply to assist her in achieving education and funded research for her dual-purpose into marine conservation and coastal planning. She was enticed by the free English courses—which will support her professional life on an international scale—and that in Australia she would also receive free school education for her children.
Dayu was accepted into Griffith University in early 2019 to study a dual Masters degree in Coastal Planning and Environmental Planning, which took her 3 years to complete.
“The whole process once accepted into the scholarship was great and assistance for the transition to Australia was very good.
“The Alumni network is incredible and I was able to build and maintain networks to support my work. This has broadened my perspective both personally and professionally and has strengthened international relations as well. Having two masters in different areas, coastal planning and environmental protection gives me better insights, wider access to expertise and opportunities for managerial roles as it has widened my network connections”.
When asked her advice for incoming students or those considering applying, Dayu stated, “Stepping out of our comfort zone only helps us to grow. This is a big opportunity to gain a world class education, form an international network and become a mutual ‘change agent’. But make sure you manage your study and life balance too and take time to enjoy and explore your new home away!”
